Omc King Cobra
1986 OMC King Cobra Sterndrive?
I have been runinning this boat for 3 years without any problems at all. This weekend I ran it up river for app. 20 miles. It then started to what sounded like cavitating the prop and continued to do so everytime I tried to plane or increase rpm's past 2600. Loss of suction type sound and rpm's increasing on motor everytime. This continued time and again. I shutdown and drifted for about an hour then restarted. It never happened again, fast, slow, plane up, plane down, like it never happened. Lube level and prop look fine. Is not the stern drive directly driven from the motor? No clutch, torque converter. Only varible seems lube temp within the unit. Is this possible? Any other explanations? More puzzled than anything. Thanks for any input.
If its running fine then I would guess you picked up a plastic bag or some weed on the prop causing it to cavitate. Once you shut down it fell off and you were good to go. Next time that happens come to a stop and put it in reverse, then see if its gone. You can also tilt up the drive to check it.
