Evinrude Outboard Lifting
Problem with outboard tilt?
I try to tilt this motor up, and all it does is smoke. For example, I press the tilt up button, I can hear the noise, but it just smokes (Even when motor isnt running) when I try to lift it.
This puts me in an awkward position for towing... Lol. I need to replace the motor and All I can think of is removing the lower part just to move it without it dragging. More importantly, I need to know (I Know very little about this motor - a 10-15yr old evinrude 70hp i believe), But would like to know what I can do to get it tilting. I do not want to turn the motor on, nor stress what was smoke, into becoming a fire.
What might it be, any suggestion on a possible course of action?

Put the motor in forward and you should be able to tilt it up manually, then block it up for towing. The trim pump itself may be bad or the engine could be seized up on the tilt pivots.

West Marine Coupon Helps Save Money on Boat Storage and Winterizing Supplies
Ok, it’s coming up to the end of the boating season. Winterizing your boat can be expensive, but we know how to ease the pain with savings of at least 10%.
Winterizing a boat can be a pain and burn a hole in your wallet, but here are some easy storage tips for your boat and a great way to save money on boat storage and winterizing supplies.
You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. The two most important things to consider for winter boat storage are the engine and drives.
Winterizing your boat engine and drive is work. But remember, improperly winterizing will cost you more in the spring! Pick a nice sunny day and proceed.
There are differing opinions on its necessity over a seasonal layup, but I always add fuel stabilizer to my tanks before my last short trip of the season. This will allow it to mix well with the fuel in the tank before it hits the boat storage yard. Save money on this item by buying in bulk. West Marine lets you buy by the case and save over 10%.
Fog your boat engine by revving the engine to about 1500 rpm and spray fogging oil into the carburetor. When the RPMs begin to drop, shut off the engine. This will coat the cylinder walls with oil and prevent corrosion building up over the winter months. Fogging oil is not only frequently a sale item at West Marine, you can use their internet coupons for additional savings.
Change your engine oil after you’ve run your engines. Warm oil flows much easier. Drain as much dirty oil as possible. It’s easiest done with an oil extractor. There are several on the market, but any in the West Marine catalog should suffice. Be sure to use the web coupon for 10% off the online price. When changing the oil filter, be sure the gasket comes off with the old filter. You’ll have some cleanup after you start the engine if you don’t.
Drain the gear lube from your drive (check your manual for your specific style of drive - Mercruiser, OMC and Volvo tend to differ). Re-fill gear lube reservoir. One tip given to me by a 40-year marine mechanic is to always replace the gaskets and o-rings when ready to re-fit the oil and vent plugs. Your particular drive may require a gear lube pump. These items are not expensive, but will save you money in the long run. Add in your West Marine savings coupon for extra savings.
Remove your propellers and examine them for nicks, or bends in the prop blades. Check the prop shaft. Grease the shaft with some quality, waterproof grease. Since security is sometimes an issue, take them home with you. I spend a cold winter day polishing them up in preparation for my spring boat launch.

Remove every drain plug on your engine, manifolds, coolers, heat exchangers, water pumps, and anything else that could have water in it (except the anti-freeze side of a closed cooling system). Run RV type antifreeze through all hoses until it comes out the other side of the block.
Disconnect your batteries. Best scenario would be to remove them and store them in a cool, dry place. If a battery replacement is needed, remember to save by using your 10% savings coupon at West Marine.
Be sure to winterize other parts of your boat. Head, shower, Fresh Water, and air conditioner should all be properly winterized.

older mercruiser stern drives???
I removed the lower case to have some work done to it. When I reinstalled it I now have problems shifting. There was what appeared to be 2 drive shafts between the upper and lower case. I assume one is for the water pump? The other is obviously to drive the prop. Does my shifting problems have to do with the shafts?
I just spent my weekend doing the water pump - so I had it all apart. From the back ( standing behind the boat), the first shaft looking thing is the plastic/metal pipe for output of the water pump. Then there is the Drive Shaft for the prop and way at the end towards the boat is the shifter shaft. It mates up with a linkage that seats into the geared teeth. Its about 2" long, it passes through to the exposed top side and you can use your finger to feel it from behind. The linkage to your gear shifter engages it. When reasembling the lower case to the top I had to fiddle with the piece to get it to mate up. I dont know how to verify what gear your lower unit is in - but once you are certain it is in forward - and your throttle is in forward - assembling the two to mate will do the trick. Becaue of the geared teeth - its easy enough to have it "fit" in any situation.

How do I convert an iPod video file to a mpg file?
What software do I need to convert a m4v file to an mpg2 file? I do not want to put movies onto my iPod, I want to take the videos I have purchased from iTunes and burn them onto either a video cd or a DVD so that I can watch them on my DVD navigation system and listen to them through the stereo in my truck.
Nero will not import the files and Roxio won't even see or allow me to drag and drop them into the project window.
Those videos were protected by iTunes so no converter could convert it.

Pontoon Boat Safety Tips
A pontoon or party boat can be a fun and relaxing way to travel out on the water. These spacious boats hold as many as 15 or so people and can allow for sunbathing, music and partying! Several months ago after searching through various listings of used Pontoon boats for sale, we found a great deal on one for just under $5500. The boat can hold up to ten passengers, includes a built-in radio, fish finder, and spacious storage for all sorts of items underneath the seat cushions. We've found the pontoon boat to be a lot of fun to take out on the lake for journeys to explore different areas and enjoy the relaxation of being on the water.
While pontoon boats are a lot of fun to take on the water, safety should always be a priority. The last thing you want is your partying to get in the way of safety and cause a hazard to other boaters or even worse an accident on the dock or water. This article will outline several safety precautions to keep in mind while you're using your pontoon boat. Safety tips for driving the boat are better learned via a safe boating course, so these will be general safety tips for storing your boat and what to do before taking it out.
On board the pontoon boat it's essential to have a flotation device. This is in case of a sudden crash or impact, or if the boat flipped. The flotation device should always be kept out in the open when your boating, just in case of an accident. Also, make sure to include a number of lifevests, which can be stored underneath the seat cushions on the boat. Err on the side of caution by having 8-10 of these just in case you have a lot of passengers. You never know when they will be needed, or if certain passengers are unable to swim.
If your pontoon boat is stored at a dock, it is necessary for it to be tied up to the dock. At our dock there are four cleats, two in front and two in back of the boat. It is essential that you properly cleat the lines and that the pontoon boat is fastened securely near the dock. Otherwise, if it is loose or becomes unattached, your boat may float away and hit something! When leaving for an outing on the boat, we always make sure one person is on board while one or more passengers are on the dock to untie the ropes from the cleats. Then the people on the dock safely board as the pontoon boat motor has been switched on.
With many new and used pontoon boats, the key also includes a special clip for the "killswitch" or "dead man's switch" attached by a cord on the keyring. This clip-on switch provides an important safety function to shut off the boat's motor. It's very important before even starting the boat that you have this clip in place, so that if your key becomes dislodged or you have to pull it out for an emergency, the motor will shut down automatically.
While out on the water, there are several safety rules to keep in mind. While I could cover them here, it is generally advised that you have completed a boating or boater's safety course for your area. Different states have different laws or regulations regarding who is required to have passed a boater safety course before being allowed to even drive a boat on the water. You can find out more about your particular state's laws and regulations at the appropriate Game and Inland Fisheries website for your state, or your state's gov site.

Kit Does Not Run Cars On Water
There's some confusion on the DIY hydrogen car kit scene. Many people are promoting it as “running your car on water” and many motorists are thinking it's a water only system. Some assume you can use water instead of petrol to run your car.
Well, the kit does not run cars on water. It's just a way of drawing attention to what is in fact a very clever hydrogen production system
So let me set the record straight. The DIY hydrogen car kit is not a system that enables your car to run on water.
So what is it then?
It is a simple system that uses electricity from your car battery to produce HHO (hydrogen) from water and inject it into your petrol. The result is more power and vastly higher fuel economy.
It operates on a 100 year old proven technology called electrolysis. Whenever you place two pieces of metal in water, and apply electricity, the water separates into its basic molecules, hydrogen and oxygen (H2O).
H2O molecules in their liquid form, which is water, are connected together. But when you apply electricity (from your car battery) the molecules separate and form a gas(called HHO) which is a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.
This HHO gas is then sucked into your engine and mixed along with the air from the Air Filter. As the gasoline is ignited in your engine so is the HHO - making it morepowerful than gasoline alone.
Experts says this is better than plain hydrogen because you are also making extra oxygen that causes the gasoline to burn faster and cleaner, resulting in better mileage and a muchcleaner exhaust emission.

What is the cause of Low oil pressure alarm?
I performed change of lube oil and its filters (fuel, lube, air cleaner, water separator) even the due for maintenance is far from schedule. I am suspecting the oil pressure sender to be the caused but how can I determine that it is really the cause and how to test whether it is functioning well?
well you can go ahead and change the sender, or find someone who has a gauge and can tell you if you have oil pressure or not. i have found that if the low pressure light is on and there is no knocking from the engine its the sender, if you have no or low oil pressure you will hear a knocking from you engine, a very noticable knock.

Ideas for attaching PWC to a 30' boat?
I'm looking to attach a Sea-doo to a 30' boat. I have been looking on the web and I cannot find any designs for this. I am thinking of a mooring system but do not find anything other then for docks. Any other ideas or links would be greatly appreciated.
You may want to look into attaching a davit to your boat so you can lift the PWC onto the aft deck.
