Since 2006, the traditional, simple, lightweight two-stroke petrol outboard has been outlawed by European Union for environmental reasons - they no longer meet emission regulations. This is due to fuel residue, including a small amount of oil, being jettisoned along with the exhaust gases. So, if you're looking to replace your two-stroke, you should choose from a new, quieter, cleaner, but heavier, four-stroke engine.
What to look for - Twist-grip tiller throttle - look out for good labelling and robust construction. Friction control - should be tight enough to leave the engine to steer itself. Stop button and kill cord - it's possible for the lanyard to get tangled up when you spin the engine. Mounting bracket - must have a nut or nut wing, or a captive pin. Screw clamps - look for loops in the end of the screw clamp handles. These can be padlocked to deter from theft. Carrying handle - designed to carry the engine comfortably. Fuel cap and tank breather - the cap should be easy to remove. Gear leaver - small outboard engines have no reverse so the leaver selects neutral or forward. Oil sight gauge - this is vital. If oil leaks out, most sumps only take a mug full of oil. Fuel tap - check for clear labelling. Tilt mechanism - some models have multiple tilt positions.
Electric outboards - Electric outboards may well be the future. They're quiet, environmentally friendly and compact. But most require a heavy battery which will limit your range. Electric outboards are traditionally used for trolling - designed to move a heavy boat at a low speed with the main engine switched off, often used by American lake fishermen.
In use, electric engines are environmentally friendly. Buy how do they recharge? The environmental advantage is lost if you have to run the engine for hours to recharge the battery. The solution could be shore power. If you are visiting marinas a lot, you can charge the batteries when you berth. Or you could buy a spare battery and keep it charged.
You could also think about using one of your boat's domestic batteries, but there is the risk of compromising power here. You might think about buying an extra domestic battery and interchanging it with one in your battery bank - so there is always one on charge and one in use.
Why not trickle charge your battery with a wind turbine or solar panel? Ideally you would have two batteries - one charging and the other in use.
Top 3 Electric tips - 1. When you motor with the engine on maximum, it will draw a large current. By reducing the speed by half a notch, the current will be halved without compromising speed too much.
2. Unlike petrol outboards where a leg is a fixed length, electric outboard's height is adjustable. Trim it so the leg is at right angles to the water to improve efficiency.
3. Use wing nut battery terminals to clamp and release the power cables, without the use of a spanner. Crocodile clips are another option, but they can be easily knocked off.
If you can accept that electric outboards will limit your range and speed, and you want to troll quietly, then it might well be the option for you. If you rely on your engine to stem the tide, you should stick to your petrol engine for a while longer.
It is a tiller drive with electric start on the motor. Last time out my motor started fine. Usually when you hit the electric start, it cranks fine right away, but now when you go to start it, it cranks really slow at first, and then sometimes it will start cranking a little faster just for a second like it wants to start, then stop cranking. I tried 2 different batteries, both were fully charged. I am losing power somewhere. Like I said it is an older johnson, I think early 70's model. Any suggestions would be great, thank you!!
I looked up the part number and it is actually a 1987.
Clean the cable connections and pull the starter apart to clean the commutator.
Extend your tiller for convenient steering of electric trolling motors or gas kicker outboards. Control speed and direction on twist throttle gas or electric trolling motors. Sit in a more comfortable position, or move forward for better trim. Postive stainless steel snap locks on extendable units, avoids slipping inherent with "cam" style locks. Easy access to outboard kill switch....

ok Im a little confused. I was fixing to add some oil to my 5.7 Mercruiser Boat Motor and noticed I had 2 places to put oil in. Facing toward the motor on right there a place with a tube running out of it, and on the left just a spot to add oil. What's the difference??? Also do I need additives if I'm just adding oil??? Question about the power steering. Can I use regular power steering fluid?
As long as you're adding 25W40 to the valve cover inlet, you'll be just fine. DO NOT add oil to that "tube" you are referring to. For power steering, of course MerCruiser recommends their stuff before anyone elses, but you can use that or you can use regular ATF as well...they're just about the same thing. Good Luck!
Fishing Basic Tackle the Average Bass Fisherman Needs to Consider
The fishing rod is the first basic piece of tackle the average bass fisherman needs to consider. I recommend a medium or medium light action graphite spinning rod.
I advise buying a rod six foot long. This rod can be used in a variety of different fishing conditions. As you become more experienced you will see the need for more specialized rods at times.
I have always used Berkley or Fenwick rods and found them to always be up to the task at hand. You should purchase your rod and reel simultaneously. I advise mounting the reel on the rod and holding it before you make a choice.
The rod and reel combo should feel right. Hold the rod direct above where the reel is seated. If you point the rod perpendicular to your body it should balance in a straight line. If it does not the reel may be too big or heavy and need to be replaced with a lighter one.
Your next consideration is the reel. For the average fisherman I recommend an open faced spinning reel. The key here is to match the reel to the line you will be using. I like a reel that holds approximately 150 yards of 8 lb fishing line.
I also like a reel with an excellent drag system. You have two choices regarding drag. I prefer reels that have a drag in the back of the reel. For me these drags are easier to adjust. Other people prefer the drag to be in the front of the reel on top of the spool. I consider this a matter of personal preference. Try both and go with what feels best to you.
When you purchase a reel you will see a term gear ratio. They affect the power of the reel. The higher the gear ratio the more line that will be retrieved by each 360 degree turn of the handle.
For line I recommend monofilament line with a test of 8-12 lb. This is as close to an all purpose line that you can get. Again as you become more experienced you will see the need for lighter and heavier lines. I use Berkley Trilene line but have tried all the major brands and found them to be good. They key is to match your line to the reel you have chosen.
I like to keep 150 yards of line on my reel. If your reel holds 150 yards of 10 lb line then I advise using that weight. You should always keep an extra spool of line on hand. You should also constantly check your line for nicks and other imperfections that can cause a fish to be lost.
Next I will discuss what selection of artificial baits an average fisherman should have in his tackle box. The average fisherman should have a varied selection of jig combinations. A jig consists of two parts. The jig head is basically a hook with a weight near the eye.
You should have several different sizes of hooks and weights. I recommend a selection of 1/16, 1/8 and ounce jig heads. You will next need a collection of skirts. The skirt is what you place on the hook to entice the bass. Skirts are generally made of plastic.

what kinda boat to buy?
I enjoy taking my kids fishing they are 13 and 8. We from the bank now but I want to purchase a used boat. I only want to spend about 3 or 4k. I would like to know your opinions on boats should I get a bass boat or a pontoon? There are several large lakes here so I am leaning towards a pontoon so that we will all have a comfortable seat.
Where do I find information on renting a boat? Do you mean rent one by the day?
Assuming that you and your family will be or already have taken the Power Squadron Boating Safety course, renting is an excellent option and often will be overall less expensive.
However I should rent and I do not. I like to tinker and change things so I have to own my own boat.
Your question has been asked by millions over the years and the answer has not changed. Write down on paper what you realistically expect out of your new /used boat. Be truthful;
How much $ do I have to play with?
Can I perform the maintenance,(paint the bottom, change the oil) these are minimum maint. requirements.
Does the boat need a real head, ( remember 18 foot boats have porta-potti's, who do you think empties those? The owner thats who.
If it is just you and the two boys fishing a small lake. I suggest a deep vee runabout, Cuddy, or bowrider. But be sure to buy a boat with enough canvas to protect you and your crew from the sun. Find one that has been kept indoors year round and being sold for health reasons. They are out there in that price range.

One weekend at Gordons Well (Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area), I had the opportunity to take a ride on a 2006 Yamaha Raptor 700, and Oh My God! That quad is one of the best I've ever ridden. I typically drive a VW short travel sand rail with a 2276cc motor, which has all the power I need to go just about anywhere in the dunes, but it doesn't have the suspension to go on hard pack or to jump.
Lately I've been considering buying another dirt bike so I would have more versatility than I do with the rail. I have a Suzuki DR350 Enduro but can't really ride that in the dunes. Last weekend I had what was quite possibly the second best weekend at the dunes in my entire life.
I got to follow behind Cardiac Dan, his 11 year old daughter Cassy, and Big Mike, (my eldest son's teacher's husband who's been riding all his life). Dan rides the Raptor 700, and his daughter rides a Suzuki 400. Mike brought a Banshee and a Warrior 350, I rode the Warrior.
I was able to keep up on the Warrior for the most part, and it was a real pleasure to follow Cassy who had no problem keeping up with her dad. In fact she was able to go a couple places I couldn't on the smaller, less powerful machine.
Anyway, on the tail end of one of the "experienced only" rides we did, Dan let me ride the Raptor for a while. It was like riding in an easy chair on a rail with a jet pack strapped to the back. I was literally yelling and laughing under my helmet, at times throwing my arms up in the air and cheering at myself because of the rush I got from that quad. I decided (before I got off the Raptor) that another dirt bike was not in my immediate future. I'll be picking up a Raptor this coming summer.

I have found a 2000 GP1200R yamaha Jet Ski. He is asking 4950 for it and it has 61 hours and is in pretty good shape, it is a guy in his high 60's and low 70's so I am sure he did'nt tear it up and took care of it. One good thing is that it comes with a Double Trailer for 2 jet skis. What would you do and is this a good deal? What would you offer for this one? I also found a 2000 gtx millenium edition that is a seadoo and looks absolutely brand new with not sure how many hours for 5000. He said low hours so I don't know. That would be 2 awesome jet skis to have and I could sell the single trailer and put the other on the 2 Ski Trailer. Does this sound like a good deal?
I believe on the internet you can easily find the current retail value of most models based on year and model for PWC's.
Take them for a test drive first. Make sure you listen, test, and look at EVERYTHING. Make sure the trim works, the throttle responds well and they PWC does NOT cut out on you during throttle speed changes. Vary the throttle around alot to insure the carb isn't clogged or has issues.
Also, make sure NOT to bring much water into the inner hull of the PWC. That way after the test drive, you inspect the engine compartment for any significant water. That way you can see if there is a possible leak at the shaft seal.
Also, make sure the tell tale water cooling jet is putting out a high amount of water up into the air at speed. If its not, just say no since its got a bad impeller or clogged cooling system.
If you liked how they performed and all basic checks mentioned passed, then you MUST go have it inspected by a PWC service shop. Failure to do this could mean you get stuck with a lemon because it had a hidden problem only a marine tech could find.
Compression test is the #1 hidden revealer of a PWC's engine's health. Bad compression eventually means a dead engine.
Remember, it is the BUYER's responsibility to verify the quality and condition of the vehicle/watercraft at the buyer's expense before buying it. Failure to do this can result in being stuck with a very expensive lemon to deal with.

Well it's that time of year when we all are busy buying gifts for all of our friends and family. This year it will be harder than ever to find the money to do this. When it comes to buying gifts this year, we need to think real hard and select a gift that has the most bang for the buck. When I say the most bang for the buck I mean a gift that well help somebody save money. In today's economy we don't have money to throw away and we need to give gifts that are useful and will help save money for our friends and family.
One of those gifts is a vehicle cover, a vehicle cover will help you save money by protecting your investment. If you have a car, SUV, truck, van, limousine, RV or other vehicle it is a good idea to cover them and keep them from losing their value. When your vehicle sits outside in the environment it will suffer. For instance, the paint fading or scratches and dings from things that come in contact with it. Like, in your driveway or in your garage and even parked in the street, it seems that as hard as you try to protect your vehicle every time your wash it you find those little dings, scratches and damage to the finish.
When you take the time to cover your vehicle you will benefit from the time and effort it takes. With a cover you protect your vehicle from people just walking by and rubbing on your car. How many times have you gone out to get in your car and there is somebody leaning up against it or sitting on the front fender or bumper. Even in the garage when you get the trash cans out you run the risk of scratching or dinging the vehicle. The cover won't just protect the exterior but also protect the interior from drying out your dash and the UV rays from the sun will fade your interior as well.
There is a new cover out this year that could make a great gift for somebody you care about. It's the iCover or Top Half Cover. This cover only covers the top part of your car. There are many benefits from this cover, like not having to scrape the snow and ice from your windows early in the morning and helping keep your car or SUV from getting too hot in the summer sun. Keeping your valuables out of sight while you are in the store shopping and all your gifts are right there for somebody to steel is also a great use for this cover. This cover only takes a few minutes to install and remove making it one of the hottest items this year in vehicle covers.
So when you think of what to buy your family and friends this holiday, think of something that will save them money and help keep the value of there vehicle. If you would like more information on vehicle covers and accessories please visit www.ClickitCoverit.Com.

is it possible for a 2000 dodge grand caravan sport to bow the tailgate trim of a Ford F-150?
My neighbor shoveled out a few spots along the sidewalk after it snowed. I was in front of my property line. My sister parked my van there while we shoveled out our large driveway. It was there for about 2 hours. I then moved the van back into my driveway. When I moved it my van was not touching his truck. I did have to back up slightly to get out but it was not touching. That was 2 days ago. Today he comes over to tell me that I hit his truck. My van has a downward sloping front. The very front is so low that it scrapes the ground when going down a steep hill or a sloped driveway. The silver trim of the tailgate does not stick out as far as his fender and boat hitch. I believe my van would have hit his rear fender, bumper and boat hook before ever touching his tailgate. He can't prove it but it upsets me that he thinks we would hit him and not say something. Also it I hit it wouldn't there be a dent not some bowing? Please help.
well just go to your neighbor and ask him if he would be willing to park his truck back in the same spot and then pull your van up the same way it was the day this was supposed to happen and see if it is even possible that it was you.

Getting Used to Sustainable System Design - the Case of Ship and Ocean 2
Getting used to sustainable system design - the case of ship and ocean 2
6.2 Policies and procedures build-up - collision preventions and control -Although ships may spend 90 – 98 percent of their operational lives underway at sea speed in deep water, it is during the mandatory beginning and end of every voyage when the risk of collisions, and groundings are highest. Ensuring the ability to maintain complete and positive control of a ship’s movement during these segments of a voyage is absolutely vital if that risk of navigation safety and protection of the marine environment is to be reduced. According to INTERTANKO’s 1996 Port and putting bigger and bigger ships (and more of them) into the same old channel:
· The design limit for trim by the stern for a tanker is 0.015L in accordance with Regulation 13 of MARPOL 73/78, Annex I. This information, which is based on tests conducted in deepwater, includes a turning circle diagram as well as tables showing time and distance to stop the vessel from full and half-speed.
· IMO Resolution A601 (15), which was adopted in 1987, contains recommendations for ensuring maneuvering information is available on board ship.
· The 1995 Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watch keeping Code, Section A-VIII/2 part 3-1, and article 49 require the master and pilot to “exchange information regarding navigation procedures, local conditions and the ship’s characteristics.”
· A Marine Board study assessed the use of numerical simulation technology to train mariners and concluded that while modeling accuracy is sufficient for deep-water operations; modeling requires refinement to provide the accuracy needed for shallow and restricted water operations.
6.3 Ship design policy build-up -In 1971, IMO adopted Resolution A.209 (VII) establishing recommendations regarding posting maneuvering 9 Regulation II-1/29.3.2 of SOLAS requires rudder movement from 35 degree on either side to 30o on the other to occur in 28 seconds or less.
IMO approved circular MSC/Circ.389 in 1985 establish interim guidelines for estimating the maneuverability -Rudder size and effectiveness, Ability to transit at slow forward speed, Propulsion and propeller characteristics, Number of available engine reversals, Adequate horsepower for control, Extra reserve rudder angle needed to allow for ship crabbing from wind forces or moored ship suction, Visibility from bridge and bridge arrangement, Hull form squat (trim and sink age) characteristics and effect of bank forces on moorings and passing ships, Air draft, Emergency anchoring ability, Amount of tow line leads and line access.
7.0 Current Ship design practice
Existing design tools cannot, at least with any degree of reliability, be used to design a vessel and ensure it will ensure environmental reliability and adequate maneuverability in shallow or restricted waters neither can it be use to satisfy demand need by clean ships . In part this is because of the extreme on-linearity of hull and propulsion characteristics under these conditions. In general, naval architects and marine engineers are educated and equipped with knowledge, skills, and design processes that permit continuous checking and balancing of constraints and design tradeoffs of vessel capabilities as the design progresses.
The intended result of the process is the best design given the basic requirements of speed, payload, and endurance nor where the waste is going. Focus is not placed on how the channels and waterways are designed. Perhaps even more importantly, there is a general lack of understanding of the operational scenario regarding piloting of vessels in constrained waterways. Only recently has there been a real attempt to fully integrate human operational practices with vessel design. The involvement of human beings onboard vessels both extends and restricts the inherent vessel maneuvering capabilities vastly complicating the necessary methodology for assuring safe and efficient operations. Taking waste issue and restricted waterway maneuverability as an important part of ship design spiral would seem a necessary step to enabling proper tradeoffs in vessel design. The reality is that maneuverability and pollution protection is still not an important consideration in ship design of many merchant ships. The result is that design decisions that can compromise environment and collision are decided in favor of other factors. Only with consideration of the full range of ship and channel design and human factors relationships affecting maneuverability will we be able to produce an efficient and safe environmental friendly marine transportation system. Now that the new issue of environment is around, then we have to squeeze in more stuff in the spiral.

8.1Shipboard and waste emission outline –treatment and elimination - Pollution Prevention (P2) or Pollution Control-this is backbone of the thrust in achieving clean ship.Pollution Prevention Use fewer environmentally harmful substances and generate less waste on board. Pollution Control: Increase treatment, processing, or destruction of wastes on board.
The basic P2 principles follow:
Eliminating the use of environmentally harmful chemicals, such as ozone-depleting substance (ODSs), toxic antifoulant hull coatings, and other hazardous materials, may be the best approach for some potential problems.
Fig.2-Treatment and emission
Reducing the amount of waste we generate on board is often better that treating it on board: for example, reducing the amount of plastics and other packaging materials taken aboard may simplify solid and plastics-waste management? Similarly, reducing the volume of liquid wastes generated (such as graywater) may simplify onboard liquid-waste treatment.
1. For the wastes and hazardous materials that cannot be prevented, we must develop pollution-control strategies and technologies.
Other technical mitigation measures are:
Antifouling
Toxic approach uses other metals such copper and zinc, or agrochemicals e.g. triazines
Fouling release approach use physical properties of low surface energy coating cause the very weak attachment of fouling organisms. E.g. silicone based coating
Fouling deterrence –marine organism not know for fouling like corals are use
Mobile hull cleaning is also being use operationally
Ballast water discharge
On board treatment – chemical (chlorination), physical treatment (Ultra violet light, heat treatment), filtration and cyclonic separation, shore base treatment is sometime being used but not common.
Operational mitigation based on information of biological difference between coastal ocean water where ballast and ballasting is done accordingly.
Air emission
Sulfur reduction in bunker fuel
Nitrogen reduction to choice of propulsion system
On board Cataleptics system like charlatanic converter, water injection, emulsion
Operationally sped reduction and use of shore power connection has been implemented
8.2 Ship collision control and prevention outlines- Most accident are attributed to a flagrant controllability problem and the remain the classic impetus necessary to make improvements to safety and environmental protection, and we e need to do more to ensure adequate vessel maneuverability perhaps better matching of vessel, channel, and operational practices.
Ship maneuverability as major iterative element of design spiral-ship maneuverability is not considered particularly important during the design process, because Owners generally do not include maneuverability requirements as part of the design specification; Firm deep- and shallow/restricted-water maneuvering standards that can be applied during the design process should be established.
Modeling and simulation -Collection of data using dual frequency DGPS receivers and proper analysis needs to be supported to enable unlocking our understanding of restricted water operations.
9.0 Environmental technology
9.1 Recent development coalition control work -Environmental technology also become hot as issue of environment start burning, this might be a start of another evolution, as environmental technology product will start selling good.
9.1 Recent environmental performance
1 Ozone safe substances- 200-Ton Air-Conditioning Plant Conversion Kit -The CG-47and DDG-51 plants have been successfully converted to the ozone-friendly refrigerant HFC-236fa conversion kit has been established by NSWCCD.
Solid waste - Solid-Waste Pulpers -The pulper (especially the large pulper) is the machine into which you dump tremendous quantities of paper, cardboard, or food waste. The waste mixes with seawater to form slurry, which is then discharged overboard. Studies show an immediate 100,000-to-1 dilution when discharged into the wake of a ship. Ships equipped with a pulper can dispose of their paper, cardboard, and food waste just about anywhere and at anytime—at sea including MARPOL areas.
Liquid waste - OWS and Bilge water Polishers: Many bilge cleaners the Navy uses today contain long-lasting emulsifying agents, which produce stable oil-in-water emulsions that shipboard OWSs cannot effectively process.
Shipboard Wastes and Emissions
To improve the reliability of sanitary waste system sewage transfer-pump suction and discharge gauges, naval research laboratory the ring-gauge isolator is adopting, ThermalDestruction and integrated liquid discharge system, the later is a concept where ultra filtration membrane systems would concentrate bilgewater, graywater, and sewage (as previously described); the clean effluents would be discharged; and the concentrates would be evaporated/incinerated in a thermal-destruction system.
9.2 Recent development coalition control work - A number of promising developments that exist today are:
1. Kutsuro Kijima showed a modeling approach that permitted analysis of passing situations that would help set procedural standards for safe passing.
2. IanDand reported on the development of models for ships squat that have shown very good accuracy over the years.
3. Larry Daggett described the advent of dual frequency DGPS receivers and their role in gathering full-scale ship trial data. In addition to the excellent horizontal accuracy of the normal DGPS receiver, these receivers provide vertical location with an accuracy measured in centimeters.
10.0 The future
There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain of success than to take a lead in the introduction of a new order of things because the innovation has for enemies all those have done well under the old conditions and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under new.
Machiavelli, the prince
Recent Safety and Environmental Strategic focus on developing metrics to measure and evaluate progress. The key issues and actions are incorporated in the clean ship concept. Ships owner and operators must understand the need to include wastes stream management in mission requirement in the design stages, with the goal of ships being in compliance. Ship designer must pursue technologies to reduce or eliminate waste streams. The metrics use to monitor progress towards achieving environmentally sound ships will focus on shipboard pollution control equipment installations, specifically the planned versus actual installations. Each waste stream or environmental pollutant, equipment installations, the percentage of total installations completed versus the planned percentage, will be used as a measure of progress for that waste stream. For waste streams and contaminants for which no equipment has been approved or anticipated, the metric will born many R&D for necessary findings .We must take a lead in effectively integrating pollution prevention and safety into the design and life cycle of our ships, systems, ordnance into the execution of our processes, and into the operation. Managing the whole process is another thing; environmental management can be optimizing by incorporating the following concept in our system:
Goal based , risk based and holistic design approach
Total cost minimization concept,
Innovative safety and environmental strategy management and integration,
Planning for uncertainty and risk, R(P1c) = R(E1) x W(E1,P1) + R(E2) x W(E2,P1) + R(E4) x W(E4,P1)
Amazingly, it seem that everything is need to be integrated in order for the world to function, this sounds ironical, even thus the environment has naturally integrated everything, the same apply to maritime on issue of safety and marine environmental impact control and protection, it is important to for the main players in design (pilots, regulators, channel designers, simulator experts and ship operators),and all concerned to share experience Regarding differences in rules and among regulators, about rules that are taken too light , sensitivity of area, degrees of hazard for various ship types ,Naval architects and ship handlers alike should take the importance of importance green house and green ship issue and (and difficulty) of the passing maneuver unrestricted waters .
Environmental issue has become so sensitive because it is more or less of evidence that nature has exercise enough patience, impact has reach flash point and those who are knowledgeable about the behavior of matter and environment could sense potential of contagious chain of reaction that can lead to heavy calamity destruction and lost. Treating the issue equally required hybridizations of all the methodology we have been using- objectives and subjective, reactive and proactive, and of course newly holistic institutionalized method that compare and consider trend analysis of every elements of what we are dealing with.

Do I need a booster pump for waterfall added to pool?
I recently added a waterfall which falls into both my pool and my spa. I have a 2 1/2HP circ pump and a 3/4 HP Booster pump for the Polaris, but the flow seems low. When I have the waterfall valve open, the return jets open, and the valve to some fountains open they just don't give alot of flow. I have to partially close off some of the valves to get the waterfall and fountain to give adequate flow. I am wondering if adding a booster pump just for the water fall will help, or do I need to purchase another circ pump to get the flow up?
Hard one to answer without being there to look. Im a pool builder and it all depends on how it was plumbed.
Before the waterfall was added (and subsequent 3 way valve attached to send water to it) did the system run sufficiently?
If it did then there is not enough supply for all options on your pool and spa.
Changing your 2.5HP pump out for a bigger one may not solve the problem either - as the suction line may be too small to draw enough volume from the pool.
If the pool, spa, waterfall is all running from one body of water - you could prioritise your jets and turn off the pool returns - if water is coming back to the pool from the new waterfall then this is as good as the pool return.
Spa is another thing because you may not want to sacrifice your flow jets as they are the main feature of the spa. BUT if your not having a spa at the time and you wish for it to look good then dont forget that this is the same volume of water returning to the pool/spa just through a different source.
So in summary - to avoid new pump etc - use flow to waterfall as primary return water to at least the pool - shut off pool returns when running waterfall. If spa jets run with this setup then great if not you may valve them down too - worth doing when not in there wanting the jets. Then it looks good when not swimming.
Booster pump for waterfall is a good option - for adequate flow and because you can remote switch it so that you can turn on the waterfall from in the house at your leisure. BUT typically you need a dedicated suction point to get the flow. If you had pre plumbing for solar heating and havent used it then great its already there. If not we would sometimes drill in 2 x 52mm holes through the shell and install 2 new 40mm safety suctions which T back to a suction line. This is pretty major work though. And adding a pump to your existing suction line has a very high likelyhood of not working due to too limitations in water supply through a 50mm pipe (if its 40mm pipe there is another reason for poor flow.)
If your equipment is a long way away from the pool it could be another cause for poor performance - likewise if your equipment is much higher than the pool level.
Just an example - my spa has 6 jets - all plumbed really well with double loops to maximise even flow - i run a 1.5HP pump located only 1m from the body of water and only 3-4m from the furthest jet - and I do not get a massive amount of flow - i use venturi air to boost my jets which works a treat.
Hope its not too much babble - just thought i could help.

I'm looking to purchase a PWC for the upcoming summer. Having no prior mechanical training and not having the bank to buy a brand new model, I'm curious how easy to repair/maintain Personal Watercraft are. I read how they work and it seems relatively simple. Please advise on whether they are easy enough for a beginner to work on or if I'll need a true repair shop's expertise.
Define simple in most modern PWC's now. Most 2000 and later model PWC's have electronic ignition systems that can be quite a pain to troubleshoot if you don't know what you are doing.
Not to mention the 4 stroke PWCs with fuel injection are
There are four things you are going to have to consider:
#1. Can the average individual with a Service Manual and basic tools work on your model and year of PWC?
The late model PWC's are now 4 strokes with fuel injection that have a complex ignition system that most individuals could not even attempt to repair without dealer diagnostic computer tools.
#2. Do I have the tools and resources available to work on it should a problem arise?
Service manual (Most important!), repair space to work on it, spark tester, standard & metric socket set, multimeter, torque bits, allen wrenches, regular hand tools, etc.
#3. Do I have the time and will MAKE the time to complete any repairs and maintenance needed?
Repairs and maintenance you want to perform yourself cannot be an indecisive matter, you are either going to get it done and do it right or pay a service shop who can.
#4. Do I have the patience for complex problems and the discipline to follow written directions by the letter?
Performing repairs and maintenance on PWC's/boats is not for those who make a habit of giving up early on every difficult problem they seem to struggle at. The key is knowing when to stop to either prevent additional damage or expense, avoid safety hazard (fire/injury), or when a repair is beyond your scope of fixing.
This should not discourage you in any way from seeing what you can do yourself to take care of PWC operation needs. You just need to be aware of what you might have to deal with should you attempt to perform maintenance or repairs by yourself.
Regardless of how you plan to handle maintenance and repairs for your PWC, the sayin goes:
The latest versions of Mercury Mariner and Mariner hybrid are introduced to a new level of sophistication. The automaker, which was established to fill the gaps between Ford and Lincoln, has added eloquence and style to Mariner. The vehicle was unveiled at the 36th annual South Florida International Auto Show in Miami last month.
"The 2008 Mercury Mariner is part of a very aggressive new product plan that will see 70 percent of our Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products either new or significantly freshened by the end of 2008," says Cisco Codina, group vice president, marketing, sales and service for Ford in North America.
The automaker, which was named after the fleet-footed winged Roman god, has significantly updated Mariner. In fact, in its 2008 version, Mariner features all-new interior, sheet metal, refined driving dynamics, complete safety package and a quieter ride. It also features fresh and remarkable design cues, outstanding waterfall grille, higher beltline, modernized materials in and out, and new-fangled ice blue interior lighting cues. These teasing additions and modifications made Mariner far from what has been launched previously. Some enthusiasts are saying that the new Mariner is no longer an ordinary Mariner but there is something more in the package that is worth having.
As mentioned, there are a number of alterations and improvements made to Mariner however there are features that have been retained to save the enigma of the past Mariners. Among those features are fuel-efficiency, fun-to-drive feel and maneuverability. These features are focal elements of a small SUV vehicle. Despite significant changes, Mariner will continue to serve the purpose of a small SUV like good towing and cargo capacity, commanding seating position, and the efficiency of a 4-wheel-drive.
There were nearly 50 cars on display at the Miami auto show. Mercury, Lincoln and Ford are some of the largest at the show. Aside from Mercury Mariner, other cars who stole the attention of the crowd were 2007 Ford Fusion, Lincoln Navigator, 2007 Ford Expedition, 2007 Lincoln MKZ and MKX and 2008 Ford Super Duty.

The engine cover is plastic, dark grey in colour & has "Thruster from Mercury Marine" in white letters on it.
I have looked all over it & there are no numbers or component brand names anywhere to say where it was made.Usually serial numbers are stamped on the mounting bracket, but on this one.
Does anyone know what model year it is from my description?I have a photo of it if I can get that on here somehow.
I need a new fuel valve to replace a broken one & my local Mercury dealer says the part is no longer available & does not know the age of the motor.
Thanks.
My friend had a mercury outboard and had the same problem, he contacted a dealer and they told him it was on an aluminium core plug on the side of the block, his was a more powerful model though so not sure if this will help you, check it out anyway, it may be correct for your engine.
