1988 GM Fuel Pump install

I removed my mechanical fuel pump from 1988 mercruiser gm motor and I am having trouble getting the push rod to move up towards the crank, I keep turning the engine over with a socket but it doesnt seem to be moving up, there is a threaded plug below on the block that lines up with the pushrod, should I remove that in order the get the pushrod out grease it up and put it back up in thats all i can come up with

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but if memory serves me the push rod just slips in, I don't remember any plug. Are you working from the fuel pump Boss???? I think your on the right track to lube it up, and try pulling it out, but you might have to pull the pan to get to it.

Annual London Events And Attractions

The New Year is celebrated in style in London and the New Year’s Day Parade held on 1 January each year attracts over 10,000 performers who take to the streets to strut their stuff.

Another popular sporting event, for both spectators and partakers, is the London Marathon which is held every April. This is London’s largest socio-sporting event and with around 30,000 runners, one of the world’s largest fund raising events.

The 42km course begins at Blackheath and ends at The Mall. The path connecting the two points is littered with historical monuments so you could do a spot of sightseeing as well as watching the race.

The beginning of summer heralds the Chelsea Flower Show. Held in May this annual event has come far since its humble beginnings in 1911 and visitors now travel from all over the world to attend this big-name event on the London calendar.

Summer in London is often associated with the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Held between June and July, Wimbledon is one of tennis' most prestigious grand slam events and the highlight of the year for any tennis enthusiasts in London when the tournament is running.

An old tradition that is still carried out during the month of June is the London to Brighton Classic Car Race. The race, which is actually more of a run, allows enthusiasts from all over Britain and Europe to enjoy a picturesque drive down to the south coast, through some of Britain's most stunning countryside.

In London, cars leave from the East Front of Hampton Court Palace every thirty seconds after 8.30 and the best place to spot them is the south side of Bushy Park.

August is the month of Notting Hill Carnival which provides a cultural celebration for everyone to enjoy, visitors and residents alike.

Usually held on a Sunday and Monday, the carnival is led by the Caribbean community. More than 300,000 people dress in elaborate costumes and transform the streets of Notting Hill into a cultural paradise. This event is not to be missed if you are in London at the time.

During popular events, hotels in London get busy so you could reserve your room online beforehand and secure yourself a space.

Preparing to Go Cruising

You and your co-captain have read Chasing Sunsets and both are now convinced that ordinary people just like you can go cruising in comfort and safety. Then you read Steering You Straight and got all the real practical information you needed to prepare, but now let's take a little time to make sure that you have the critical matters well in hand.

Be very careful about choosing a boat name. Names that are cute in the U.S. marinas lose a little luster in the real world of cruising. Think of the effect on Immigration and Customs officials when you tell them that your boat name is No Money or Runnin' Away.

Cruisers become known by their boat name and then by their first name, seldom, if ever by their surname. For example, we, on Dolphin Spirit became "the Dolphins," and the couples on Pilgrim and Osprey had the obvious applied. Skating close to the edge were the people on Gigolo.

Boat Registration papers and passports are essential for those of us who like to cruise in a legal way. As a condition of entry, almost every country in the world requires a country, not a state, registration. U.S. flagged cruisers must be Federally registered if they are going to cruise beyond Mexico. Every person on board must have a valid passport, with an expiration date more than three months past the date of entry to any country. Check this before you leave, not one hour before landfall.

Be sure to take Medicine At Sea classes, as we did, and learn how to suture wounds, set bones, give injections, take blood pressure and perform heart transplants. Luckily, we never had to use these skills on ourselves, and the offer to use them on others resulted in miraculous recoveries before we even got to see the patient.

Your cruising boat is your home, where all the essentials and hopefully some of the luxuries of everyday living must be stored. The problem with storage on a boat, is that if you don't have enough, it is very difficult and expensive to add more. If you can't, that leads to the related problem of a very unhappy co-captain, a shortened cruise and a premature boat sale. Adequate storage that gets wet, or even damp, generally has the same result.

After learning the hard way, we developed a simple rule: load on board all the clothes, provisions and spare parts you think you need, then Throw Out half the clothes and half the food, and fill the spaces created with more spare parts. Food and clothes can always be purchased.

Remember that whatever spare parts you carry will always not include one very important item, and the only way to sure you have enough is to tow a clone of your boat along with you. I had finished rebuilding one of the toilets and was tightening the last of the hold-down bolts, when the toilet bowl cracked, right up the middle. Who carries a spare toilet bowl?

The world is littered with alcohol deserts. Because they exist, and because yachts have only limited storage areas, some of which have to be allocated to food and spares, it is as important to know where these are, as it is to know the hurricane and cyclone prone areas.

According to most of the cruising books and articles we read before sailing, self-steering mechanisms and pressure cookers were the most important pieces of equipment on board a boat. What a load of crap, but a great segue to what is truly the critical item in every cruising boat - toilet paper.

More hours of anchorage cocktail time are spent discussing toilet paper than almost any other subject, apart from the clear leader, "Crazy cruisers we have met who are not in the cockpit this evening." Everyone has their own theory about how many rolls should be carried, and the obvious pre-requisite of how many sheets per flush is acceptable.

There is nothing more desperate than the cruiser who has run out of reading material, approaching every new boat in an anchorage with the melancholy cry of, "Got any books to swap?" He is the one who quotes interesting paragraphs from the Furuno Radar Users Manual at cocktail time, and can be seen openly reading his wife's Danielle Steele novels. The one thing we added to Dolphin Spirit that paid for itself over and over, was bookshelves, approximately 30 feet of bookshelves, and we filled them to overflowing.

Medicine, booze, spare parts, toilet paper, books, boat papers, boat names - who said all you needed to go cruising was to know which direction is it towards the sunset?

Can I use a steel putty to weld together a steering component rusted off my boat from saltwater?

I have a small jet boat and instead of buying a whole new steering cable I want to weld a component that will do the job. Will steel putty from the store do the trick and hold it? can it be as strong as a real weld?

Is it strong enough? Do you really want ot find out? I wouldnt take the risk.......your talking about the steering on a jet boat.........how fun would it be to be going 65MPH across the water and have that cable snap? I say buy a new one

can marine grade fabric be painted?

we are redoing our boat and all of our cuddy seats are in good condition except for the fact that they are an ugly blue color. i would like to know if there is any way to paint or dye them a different color... the material is a soft velvet-like material

Probably not, paint doesn't like to stick to cloth.

You might find a dye that will make it darker, but I would consult with a experienced upholstery shop

You don't necessarily have to depict yourself in the painting. You could simply show the things/places you encountered on this journey.
Warm/bright colors for "good" things, cool/dark colors for "not so good things". Is there something that happened recently? This may be freshest in your mind. I'm just trying to throw some things out there to light that spark.
Oh, by the way, why do I need to keep in mind that you are a girl? What the h*ll does that matter? Don't sell yourself so short.

Why is an outboard motor more expensive than a whole boat, motor and trailer?

Im shopping for a starter boat for our family. A used 17ft, open bow, tri hull, runabout or a 17ft deck boat. While searching the thousands of boat related ads, It seems that a good motor is expensive. And a used boat, trailer & motor isnt? (by comparison) Why is that? Is a motor worth more when its not attached to anything?

Because lots of people have boats and trailers with BAD MOTORS!

AND a new motor cost lots of $$$$$$$

SO supply and demand make good used outboards often sell higher than a total package.

Also if you are looking on e-bay you can use a freight company and ship an outboard anywhere in the US! You have to go pick up the full package so your search just narrowed to a 100 to 300 max mile radius from where you live!

I got a boat given to me 3 years ago and after spending $600 to get it in running order and another $400 this year to keep it running good my FREE gift has cost me well over $1,000.

A good friend once told me a boat is: "a whole in the water that you throw money into"

They are lots of fun though, my advice would be get as new a boat as your budget will allow and make sure to have it serviced annually! Because as you know it cost allot to replace a motor!

304 or 316 Stainless Steel?

Has anybody built their own Transom Rail. I'm getting a fabricator to build one for me and he asked if I wanted to use 316 or 304 stainless. He said that 304 is stronger and will also be ok in the Marine environment where it is used in things such as bolts and high strength structures. He said it's also cheaper and easily available compared to 316. The 304 will also be highly polished the same as 316.

So the question is has anybody had some boat fixture made in 304 and how does it perform? From my own research on the web it appears you can use 304, but there is nothing like peoples own experience.

BTW the boat is used in Salt Water environment

304 stainless is the most common and will fit your bill without any problems. 316 stainless is used in highly caustic or acidic environments (pulp mills and zinc refineries). We use both materials during construction and 304, 99% of the time.

HELP! Who is knowledgeable about Personal Watercraft?

I acquired a Yamaha Pwc and don't know if its a Waverunner, Waveblaster, Waveraider or what? It's a 1993 700cc and that's about all the info I have.
